    1. Thanks for the link. I went right to it! My Grandmother had lilac sachets in her lingerie drawer too and a trellis of lilacs growing up over the porch. I always associate her with that strong, sweet fragrance. It is true: Smell is the strongest and most vivid sense for long-term memories. You must be familiar with Diane Ackerman’s work: A Natural History of the Senses, great at blending the literary with the scientific.

      1. Marian – Isn’t it interesting that so many women in our young-and-spunky age bracket had grandmothers who favored lilac?! And yes, I am familiar with Diane Ackerman’s work. If any of your readers aren’t they would do well to avail themselves with her writing.
